In the early morning floating lines work well and as the heat of the day increases, change to sinking lines with a nymph pattern fly. In the heat of the day, when trout feed less actively, slower retrieves tend to work better. During the evening, a hatch often appears on the water’s edge, and the trout start sipping the mayflies off the surface. At this stage you would use your floating line with extremely light tippet as to not spook the feeding trout. A gentle cast of a dry fly in the general direction of a feeding line, with a small midge on the end should entice the fussiest of trout.
