Welcome to Verlorenkloof Educare
The Hlokomela Early Childhood Development Centre at Verlorenkloof was born from a heartfelt desire to provide a safe, nurturing, and educational environment for the pre-school children of Verlorenkloof’s dedicated staff. From its humble beginnings with one teacher in the Old Farmhouse, in 2018, the Centre has grown into a joyful haven for babies and toddlers, now thriving in a cosy stone cottage near the main entrance.
Under the loving leadership of Magriet Engelbrecht and her passionate team, our children learn through play, both in English and their mother tongue, Sepedi. The Centre is not only a place of growth for the children, but a space in which our staff is empowered to grow as well. Magriet is a qualified pre-primary and primary school teacher, and she manages the Centre and the implementation of a pre-school curriculum. Under her guidance some of our assistant teachers are furthering their education and training to hopefully become qualified teachers.
Every milestone is celebrated – from first steps to first songs – and highlights for the kids and their parents include our end-of-year concert, exciting fundraising projects like our second-hand goods shop, and continuous improvements to our facilities. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the stone cottage has been transformed with learning materials, playground equipment, and a growing outdoor area.
Hlokomela (“To take care of or watch over”) is a place full of heart, growth, and community.

Providing Safe and Nurturing Care for Young Children
Hlokomela ECD Centre accommodates children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years old. The Centre provides our little ones’ parents, who work in all sections of the Verlorenkloof business, with peace of mind as their children are safe and cared for whilst they play and learn all day long.
These flourishing preschoolers are a testimony of this Centre being an important asset within the community. Hlokomela Verlorenkloof ECD Centre is a source of great pride and joy to all the Verlorenkloof staff members.
Vision
To instill necessary skills and resources to ensure age-appropriate education and early childhood development in the community.
Mission
Promotion of effective, simple and feasible Early Childhood Development as it is crucial for school readiness. This will be achieved by focussing on the development of:
Creativity
Creative problem solving, emotional regulation and sensory stimulation.
Play
To stimulate imaginitive play/develop imagination.
Learning through play.
Learning responsibility in terms of tidying up after and taking care of the toys.
Developing social skills such as sharing.
Gross & Fine Motor Skills
Stimulates physical growth, spacial awareness and ability to execute essential fine motor movements.
Hygiene & Environment
To help children develop a good hygienic routine like washing hands after using the toilet and before eating.
To learn more about nature and the environment.
To understand why we should try to recycle and not pollute.
Donations
Our present costs are, to a large extent, covered by the founding company. This is, however, not sustainable and we rely greatly on the generous financial support of the community and other donors to help us accomplish our vision. Help us fulfil our needs by sponsoring relevant equipment/items or contributing financially.
